About Us

Helping Hands for Better Life Initiative exists to restore dignity and create lasting pathways to a better life.

Who We Are

Helping Hands for Better Life Initiative is a Nigerian non-governmental organisation registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC Reg. No: 9586209). We exist to restore dignity and create lasting pathways to a better life for vulnerable children, youth, families and communities across Nigeria.

Nigeria is a nation of immense potential, yet millions of people still face daily struggles with poverty, limited access to quality education, inadequate healthcare, food insecurity, and the exclusion of persons with disabilities. In many rural communities and urban informal settlements, children grow up without the basic support they need to thrive. Families are forced to choose between food and school fees. Young people leave school without practical skills. Persons living with disabilities are often left on the margins of society.

We believe this reality does not have to define the future. When hands come together in service — the hands of communities, partners, volunteers and donors — lives can be transformed. That conviction is the heart of our name and our work.

Our Story & Purpose

Helping Hands for Better Life Initiative was founded on the simple but powerful idea that every person deserves access to opportunity, care and dignity — regardless of where they were born, their ability, or their economic status. We work primarily in Nigeria, where the need is urgent and the impact of local, grounded action can be profound.

Our work is rooted in the realities of Nigerian communities: from children who walk long distances for water, to families who depend on daily income just to eat, to young people who need skills to escape the cycle of poverty, and to persons with disabilities who seek inclusion and independence. We do not believe in short-term charity alone. We believe in building capacity, strengthening families, and creating systems that last.

While our primary focus remains Nigeria, we recognise that the challenges of poverty, inequality and exclusion are global. We therefore welcome partnerships, knowledge exchange and support from individuals and organisations both within Nigeria and abroad who share our commitment to human dignity and sustainable development.

Purpose

Mission, Vision & Approach

Our Mission

To restore dignity and create sustainable opportunities for vulnerable children, youth and families through education, care, skills development, nutrition support and community empowerment — with a special focus on inclusion for persons with disabilities.

Our Vision

A Nigeria — and a world — where every individual has the chance to live a better life with dignity, opportunity and hope. No child left behind. No family abandoned. No person excluded because of ability or circumstance.

Our Approach

We combine grassroots community engagement with practical programs, local partnerships and transparent use of resources. We prioritise solutions that communities can own and sustain long after external support ends.

What We Focus On

Education & Skills Development — We support children and youth with learning materials, digital literacy, vocational training and mentorship so they can build a stronger future. In a country where millions of children remain out of school, education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty.

Disability Inclusion & Care — Persons with disabilities in Nigeria often face stigma, inaccessible environments and limited opportunities. We work to promote inclusion, provide support, and help communities recognise the full potential of every individual.

Nutrition, Water & Emergency Relief — Hunger and lack of clean water still affect many households. We respond with food support, hygiene education and practical interventions that protect the health and dignity of children and families.

Youth Empowerment — Nigeria has one of the largest youth populations in the world. We invest in skills, confidence and pathways to productive livelihoods so young people can become agents of change in their own communities.

Community Strengthening — Lasting change happens when communities are involved. We work with local leaders, caregivers and volunteers to design solutions that fit real needs and can be sustained over time.

Our Values

Everything we do is guided by a clear set of principles:

Dignity — Every person we serve is treated with respect. We do not see beneficiaries as objects of charity, but as partners in building better lives.

Inclusion — We intentionally design programs that welcome children, youth and adults of all abilities and backgrounds.

Accountability — We are registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and committed to transparent, ethical use of every resource entrusted to us. Donors and partners deserve clear reporting and measurable impact.

Compassion in Action — Care without practical help is incomplete. We combine empathy with concrete programs that meet real needs.

Sustainability — We prefer solutions that communities can continue, adapt and own. Our goal is not dependency, but empowerment.

Partnership — We cannot do this work alone. We welcome collaboration with individuals, local organisations, diaspora groups, foundations and international partners who share our vision.

Working in Nigeria, Connected to the World

Nigeria faces complex development challenges — from poverty and unemployment to gaps in education and healthcare infrastructure. At the same time, Nigerian communities are full of resilience, creativity and determination. Our role is to walk alongside those communities, amplifying what already works and filling critical gaps with practical support.

We also recognise the power of the Nigerian diaspora and international friends of Nigeria. Many of our supporters live outside the country yet remain deeply connected to home. Through transparent bank accounts (including Naira, USD, GBP and Euro), clear communication and accountable programming, we make it possible for people everywhere to contribute meaningfully to change on the ground.

Whether you are in Lagos, London, Atlanta or elsewhere, your support helps a child stay in school, a family put food on the table, a young person learn a trade, or a person with disability find inclusion and hope.
